FLIGHT TEST MODIFICATION MECHANIC A Summary: Modifies the structure of various types of production and experimental aircraft to accommodate installation of flight test and instrumentation equipment for experimental flight test programs. Plans, lays out, and fabricates sheet metal parts and assemblies and installs on aircraft for flight test projects as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works from drawings, photos, sketches, oral and written instructions.
Plans sequence of operations and methods to follow in laying out, fabricating, assembling, and installing complex sheet metal, plastic, machined, extruded and tubing parts and assemblies for aircraft and related equipment.
Makes layouts and completely builds temporary tooling to fabrication developmental or modified structural assemblies for installation in aircraft or for mockup.
Uses a wide variety of fabrication machines, such as power shears, power brakes, hand brakes, saws, routers, grinders, shrinkers, forming rolls, drill press, riveters, and arbor press to complete assigned project.
Fabricates parts and assemblies from measurements taken directly from aircraft as required.
Performs major modification or rework to exterior contour of aircraft involving primary structure to accommodate new configurations or radomes, antennas, stress doors, camera fairings air scoops, pods and sensors. Hand fits assemblies to extremely close tolerances.
Modifies floor structure, frames, stringer, bulkheads and load caring members of aircraft to support racks of electronic and flight test equipment.
Responsible for installation of mechanical structures of missile radar components and all power equipment used to operate flight test equipment and for the installation of cameras, missile pylons, pods and antennas.
Qualifies for and maintains necessary certifications and/or licenses and required.
Performs rework of the same nature and level of difficulty as described.
Performs incidental related duties as assigned or required.
